Aboard vessels, a fire is one of the greatest challenges a crew can face. Therefore, the fire-fighting system must be in perfect condition. The maritime environment requires equipment with high resistance to abrasion, ozone, and, especially, saline corrosion.
This Eurosul guide highlights the technical requirements of marine fire hoses and the importance of correct connections to ensure a fast and safe response.
The Difference of Marine Fire Hoses (Type 3 and 4)
Unlike standard hoses, hoses for maritime and offshore use (usually Type 3 or 4) have a reinforced outer coating, often in nitrile rubber or polyurethane. This ensures they do not “rot” with salty humidity and that they withstand higher working pressures, in addition to being more resistant to contact with oils and chemicals common in engine rooms.
Connections and Couplings: Agility that Saves Lives
The standardization of connections (such as the Storz system or quick couplings in brass/marine aluminum) is vital. An oxidized or incompatible connection can render the entire hydrant system useless at the moment of emergency. Eurosul provides hoses already assembled with high-quality unions, ensuring total tightness and ease of handling by the fire brigade.
Inspection and Preventive Maintenance
NORMAM and SOLAS standards require periodic inspections and tightness tests on hoses. Checking for cracks, ensuring seals are intact, and verifying correct coiling are simple steps that prevent catastrophic failures. At Eurosul, in addition to supply, we provide guidance on correct stowage in fire boxes to prolong the equipment’s service life.
