Understand how the thermal technology of immersion suits protects against hypothermia and ensures survival in extreme abandonment situations.
In a vessel abandonment, the greatest enemy is not just the water, but its temperature. Hypothermia can incapacitate a survivor within minutes. For this reason, the immersion suit (also known as a survival suit) becomes the most critical piece of lifesaving equipment. It maintains body temperature, keeps the body dry and provides buoyancy, thus acting as the last barrier between life and freezing waters.
This Eurosul guide explores the science behind thermal insulation, the SOLAS requirements and how to ensure the integrity of your equipment.
Thermal Protection and Insulation
Manufacturers produce immersion suits in high-quality neoprene or multi-layer materials that create an efficient thermal barrier. There are two main types:
- Non-Insulated Suits: must be worn together with thermal undergarments to ensure the necessary protection.
- Insulated Suits: have built-in insulation and maintain body temperature for up to 6 hours in waters between 0°C and 2°C.

SOLAS Requirements and Preventive Maintenance
The SOLAS Convention requires that cargo and passenger vessels operating in cold waters provide immersion suits for every person on board. Beyond ownership, maintenance is essential: the watertight closure (zipper), reflective tapes and whistle must be inspected regularly.
A suit with leaks loses its primary insulation function. Therefore, Eurosul offers complete maintenance solutions, such as the Immersion Suit Tester:

This equipment is essential to verify watertightness and identify possible leaks before they become a real risk on board.
