A Rising Giant: Paranaguá Strengthens Its Position as One of South America’s Most Efficient and Strategic Ports

The Port of Paranaguá, managed by Portos do Paraná, is once again in the spotlight of Brazilian foreign trade, having set consecutive records in cargo handling while making significant advances in infrastructure. Despite facing climatic and logistical challenges, the Paraná terminal reaffirms its role as a multi-cargo hub, playing a direct role in the competitiveness of agribusiness, industry, and import/export operations in southern Brazil.

The Machine That Never Stops: Historic Records and Sustained Growth

The recent performance of the Port of Paranaguá is not just impressive—it’s historic.
In 2024, the terminal reached an unprecedented 66,769,001 tons handled, a 2.1% increase compared to 2023, despite 115 days of rainfall, a factor that typically limits port operations.

The accelerated pace continued:

  • 1st half of 2025: 34,252,008 tons – a new record for the period;
  • 1st quarter of 2025: 6.3% growth, totaling 17,420,779 tons;
  • July 2024: A historic monthly record with 7.3 million tons handled in just one month.

These numbers place Paranaguá among the most dynamic ports in Brazil and a benchmark for operational efficiency.

Infrastructure and Efficiency: The Foundations of Growth

The advancements of the last decade reflect consistent investments in infrastructure, technology, and management. Key pillars of this transformation include:

🔹 Dredging and Increased Draft
The deepening of the port’s draft has allowed for the docking of larger ships, with more cargo, reducing waiting times and optimizing operational windows.

🔹 Expansion of Capacity and Berths
Better utilization of berths and the modernization of docking systems have enhanced port productivity, allowing for smoother and more predictable operations.

🔹 Integrated Logistical Efficiency
With a strong presence in grains, sugar, meal, petroleum derivatives, containers, and fertilizers, Paranaguá has consolidated itself as a multi-cargo port. In 2024, six products accounted for 87.3% of all cargo handled.

Additionally, the terminal saw significant growth in general cargo (+23% in 2024) and vehicle flow, with a 29% increase (112,870 units loaded and unloaded).

The port has also become a key player in industrial commodities: in the first half of 2025, it accounted for 64% of Brazil’s soybean oil exports, reinforcing its importance in the agro-industrial supply chain.

Direct Economic Impact on the Southern Region and the Country

The reach of the Port of Paranaguá extends far beyond Paraná’s borders.
The volume handled in 2024 represents 80% of the combined grain production of Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul—highlighting the strategic role of the terminal in national agricultural exports.

Furthermore, sustainable growth has resulted in:

  • Increased competitiveness in agribusiness;
  • Better logistical integration between ports, railways, and highways;
  • Creation of direct and indirect jobs;
  • Stimulus for the modernization of the southern Brazil logistics corridors.

With optimistic projections, the port is expected to surpass the 70 million-ton mark by the end of 2025, driven by the harvest season and continued investments.

What This Means for the Shipping, Offshore, and Companies Like Eurosul

For companies relying on the Port of Paranaguá—especially in providing technical materials, pyrotechnics, and specialized equipment—the scenario is doubly relevant:

Higher Flow, Lower Waiting Time
Increasing efficiency offers opportunities for faster operations, reduced waiting times at the docks, and more predictable logistics.

Attention to Land-side Bottlenecks
With increased demand, it’s essential to monitor access conditions via highways and railways, along with scheduling and safety procedures for regulated cargo.

More Diversified Port, More Opportunities
The expansion of container and general cargo operations creates new import/export opportunities for sectors beyond agriculture.

For ship chandlers, offshore operators, and maritime suppliers, Paranaguá is cementing its role as a strategic port with significant expansion potential in the coming years.
